Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release September’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
